Free Earth Day Resources

We love Earth Day. When my youngest was in preschool, I took in recycled items and showed the kids how to recycle common household items… like milk jugs and food boxes. They loved it… and so did the teacher. I also gave each of the kids a reusable grocery bag. We still use ours almost every time we go to the store. This is just one way we help care for Mother Earth… in which God created… each and every day of the year. We also keep 3 recycling bins on our back porch where we place papers, glass and plastic bottles, and any cardboard or food boxes. We pay a deposit on pop cans or bottles, so those are separate, since they go back to the stores. Our kids help take recyclable items to the recycling center each month. This helps teach them the importance of recycling.

Fun Facts for you {mostly on paper since homeschoolers use a lot of paper}:

  • Almost 45 million tons of paper and paper board was recycled in 2010. (Source)
  • In 2010, 28.5% of unrecycled waste was paper {the most thrown away item}. (Source)
  • Also, the most thrown away items are… containers and packaging. (Source)
  • Nationally, in 2010, we recycled and composted over 85 million tons of waste. (Source)
  • “Every ton of mixed paper recycled can save the energy equivalent of 165 gallons of gasoline.” (Source)
  • “98 tons of various resources are required to make one ton of paper.” (Source)

Fun FreeBEE Activities:

  • Make Earth Day bars… these are so good. We’ve made them for the last 4 or 5 years. Fun too… and most of the ingredients you should have on hand {making them, in a sense, free}. I think we will make these next week… for our Kids in the Kitchen post.

What we received free this week {not counting my review items}:
